NHSA Raymond S. Burton Memorial Trail Project Award Application

Ray Burton snowmobiling

Ray Burton was the longest-serving Executive Councilor in New Hampshire history. Although he was the District 1 Councilor and hailed from Bath, he was a supporter of snowmobiling across the whole state.

In tribute to Ray Burton and his contributions to snowmobiling in New Hampshire, the NHSA Board has created an annual award of $1,000 for a snowmobile trail project that is both fitting to him and continues his legacy of service to New Hampshire snowmobiling.

Application Outline and Instructions

DEADLINE: April 1, 4pm

The application is filled in essentially using the guidelines for the Summer Trail Maintenance GIA application with a few differences.

Although we do not ask for club financial information, financial need is a consideration for scoring and should be referenced on the accompanying essay. We are looking to assist with projects that go beyond basic trail maintenance.

We ask for a project coordinator rather than the trail administrator as a responsible person and point of contact. This is meant to give the club maximum flexibility in how they want to be the project lead. Any club member is eligible to apply.

  • All NHSA affiliating clubs are eligible to submit an application.
  • There are no required matching percentages beyond the effort to put the project together.
  • Submissions using forms copied from BOT Summer GIA forms i.e. application forms, along with permission forms.
  • Committee may use alternates if needed to resolve conflicts of interest.
  • Award announced at annual meeting.

Points To Consider

  • Project should be identifiable as a memorial (not all inclusive but something along the lines of a scenic view with picnic tables, short section of trail to a particular scenic vista, and extensive trail signing projects, possibly a bridge that is crucial to a club’s trail system.)
  • Not a hard rule, but preference is given to projects unlikely to be funded through normal Grant in Aid, that will benefit snowmobilers and the sport.
  • A letter/essay, ideally no more than a page explaining the project. The essay should define the project along with its size and scope, including total cost. Explain the club’s financial need to make the project happen. Make sure to include a paragraph on the project’s benefit to the snowmobile community. Also indicate if the project will provide benefits and goodwill with other user groups. Comment on youth involvement or if the project will serve to promote youth involvement and volunteerism for the club and snowmobiling in general.

Scoring

Submissions will be scored in a similar manner to the scholarships, i.e. three independent judges working to a standard score sheet covering the following categories:

  • Club financial need: 25%
  • Benefit the snowmobile community: 25%
  • Goodwill towards other user groups: 10%
  • Fitting tribute/memorial to Ray Burton: 10%
  • Youth involvement: 30%

The Following Attachments Must Accompany Application:

They may be uploaded when submitting the application or mailed to the NHSA office.

All construction projects must have the landowner permission form, available from GIA attached to this application.

List of permits needed for construction, such as wetlands permits.

Is the project on state or federal land? If so, include a State and Federal Project Evaluation form, available from GIA.

Current club/organization trail map showing the “exact” location of the project(s).

Attention: To be considered, this application must be electronically submitted via the form below or printed and mailed to: NHSA, 600 Laconia Rd, Suite 2, Tilton, NH 03276. DEADLINE: April 1, 4pm
